Neon signs that dot the American landscape once seemed to blanket it entirely—bright, flickering tubes illuminated crowded business corridors, seemingly buzzing above every bar and luring cars from every dark highway for a night's rest. As author Tom Wolfe explained in 1965, "They are the new landmarks of America, the new guideposts, the new way Americans get their bearings."
While those days described by Wolfe are long gone, many of the signs still remain. Some are tucked away in small towns off old highways and others are right in front of our faces in metropolitan centers.
The best way to discover the signs that still stand is to hit the road. In Good Signs, you'll find signs from Washington, Nevada, California, Idaho, Oregon and beyond—all photographed by Zack Bolotin while periodically driving around the country between 2018 and 2024.
This book is an ode to the old days, the neon, the plastic and the hand-painted signs and of course—what we find on the road.
