As an architectural photographer, Art Hupy not only documented the rise of mid-century modernism in the Pacific Northwest but unintentionally and beautifully captured the growth of the region as a whole.
This new book is the first to display a curated collection from Art Hupy's vast career. Until now, the majority of his work has only been seen in newspapers and other editorial publications—most of which are long out of print. As a tireless freelancer, Hupy never considered his editorial photography as art—he considered it his work. But luckily for us, he took great pride in doing great work.
Inside the pages of Art Hupy: Architecture and Life in the Pacific Northwest, readers will find familiar sites from around Washington and Oregon in the 1950s and 1960s: Seattle Center, downtown Seattle and Ivar's on the waterfront, while being introduced to beautiful architecture that can still be found right under their noses.
This project is the result of Zack Bolotin's four years of research, writing and retouching, as well as a partnership between Porchlight Design Co. and Docomomo US/WEWA. Docomomo is a national non-profit with local chapters across the country that lead the charge in documenting and preserving modern architecture.
Written and designed by Zack Bolotin with a foreword by Eugenia Woo.
